trains is pleased to announce the second painting in its new series of historical
events in railroading. Superbly executed by Ron Hatch, the new painting is a depiction of a well-documented event in 1862. |
The Escape of the Locomotive Secretary

|
As part of the overall Union strategy to defeat the rebellion in 1862, Federal forces advanced on the Confederate capital at Richmond from two directions. The main thrust, led by George B. McClellan, was up the Yorktown peninsula. At the same time, a second army, under the command of John Pope menaced the city from the north while also protecting Washington, DC from possible attack. After defeating McClellan in the Seven Days Battles, Lee was able to turn his forces to deal with Pope. This campaign became known as the "Second Bull Run". A few days prior to the main battle, "Stonewall" Jackson's troops were moving rapidly to cut Pope's supply lines. On August 26, 1862, his forces, led by the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, reached the U.S. Military Railroad at Bristoe Station, Virginia. Colonel Thomas Munford can be seen ordering his forces forward against the Union soldiers holding the station just as a supply train pulled by the Taunton Locomotive Works engine "Secretary" arrives on the scene. The Confederates try to stop the train with a hasty barricade of railroad ties, but with bullets whistling around him, the engineer opened the throttle wide and threw himself down on the cab floor… Authenticated
