The Western & Atlantic Railroad’s TEXAS is the most famous of the several engines which pursued the stolen GENERAL during the “Great Locomotive Chase” in 1862. Built by Danforth, Cook & Company of Paterson NJ in 1856. The TEXAS was a typical 4-4-0 “American” with several “transitional” features which show its 1850s origin. These include the angled cylinders, the lack of a cylinder “saddle” and the early spread truck design. The TEXAS was also fitted with the W&A’s signature iron bar pilot and Radley & Hunter balloon stack. |
